Why Pursue This Certification?
When procurement processes have not been adapted for AI, organisations make vendor decisions based on assurances they cannot verify. A vendor's claim that their model has been tested for bias is accepted without evidence of what was tested, against what benchmarks, and on which populations. Security posture is evaluated using questionnaires designed for traditional SaaS, missing attack surfaces specific to AI such as adversarial inputs, data poisoning, and prompt injection. Data handling obligations are specified in contract language borrowed from conventional data processing agreements that do not account for how AI systems consume, embed, and retain data.
The deployer-provider accountability gap is one of the most common sources of unmanaged AI risk. The deploying organisation assumes the provider has governed the system. The provider assumes governance is the deployer's responsibility once the system is in production. Neither side fully owns it. Risk accumulates in the gap between them. The AIPP certification exists because RESAIA believes professionals who procure and manage third-party AI need governance methodology that extends across organisational boundaries, not just within them.
